Site Specific Seismic Hazard Assessment


A probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) was undertaken for the Kawarau Falls Bridge site using a seismic source model developed by GNS for the 2010 National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM). The model includes data on over 500 known faults in New Zealand as well as estimates for the parameters of background seismicity defined on a 0.1 x 0.1 degree grid. The analysis was undertaken using the open-source software Openquake, which was developed as part of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM).
The level of seismic hazard at the site is moderate to high by New Zealand standards. The z-factor (0.5 times the magnitude-weighted 0.5s spectral acceleration for the 500 year return period on Site Class C) was found to be 0.29, which is slightly lower than the value of 0.32 published in NZS1170.5. The recommended spectra have been smoothed from the raw data, ensuring that the minimum and maximum requirements of the NZ Transport Agency’s Bridge manual are satisfied.
